Experts hope new vaccines will be ready by the end of the decade, with the possibility of new preventable diseases being eradicated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that new vaccines are urgently needed to protect against diseases such as Zika, dengue, and chikungunya, which are all on the rise.

“We need new vaccines and we need them now,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s Director-General.

“We are on the cusp of a new era where we can prevent and even eradicate many of the diseases that cause misery and death.”

WHO has called on vaccine manufacturers to speed up the development of new vaccines to protect people from these and other diseases.

The agency is also urging countries to improve their health systems so that people have access to the vaccines they need.
