Celebrating 500,000 G-Class Models: A Look at Mercedes-Benz's Iconic Off-Roader
Key Highlights :
Since the launch of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in 1979, the iconic off-roader has become one of the most popular vehicles in the world. And to celebrate the 500,000th G-Class rolling off the Magna Steyr production line in Graz, Austria, Mercedes-Benz has created a one-of-a-kind tribute model.
The original G-Wagen was designed as a military off-roader, but was released to the public in 1979. It featured four powertrain options with power outputs ranging between 53kW and 110kW. The most powerful model currently on sale is the G63 AMG, with 430kW of power from its twin-turbocharged V8. The original G-Wagen was offered with either a short wheelbase cabriolet body, or short and long wheelbase wagons.
Mercedes-Benz attributes much of the G-Class' success to its consistent design language. To celebrate the 500,000th G-Class, Mercedes-Benz has taken design cues from the 1986 Mercedes-Benz 280 GE. The one-off anniversary edition vehicle features the original Agave Green exterior colour and checkered seat design, with “No. 500,000” printed on the passenger’s grab handle. The unique door sill trim is also included to show the range of personalisation options on offer in the G-Wagen.
In 2024, Mercedes-Benz will reach another milestone celebrating 45 years of G-Class production. The brand has said that the electric EQG, which is due to be released in 2024, will feature four electric motors and its batteries will be integrated in the ladder frame to ensure a low centre of gravity. Mercedes-Benz is also planning to release an updated G-Class next year, which it says will push the boundaries of the off-road sector. It is expected that the new model will include a new infotainment system which features in other models of its current line-up.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has come a long way since its launch in 1979, and the 500,000th model is a testament to the iconic off-roader's success. With plans for an electric EQG and an updated model on the horizon, the G-Class is sure to remain a popular vehicle for years to come.
