# Cranberry Juice: A Natural Remedy for Urinary Tract Infections

Current World Trends

Key Highlights :

1. Cranberry juice can help stop urinary tract infections.
2. It is not effective in the elderly, pregnant women, or those with bladder-emptying problems.

It’s been an old wives’ tale for decades – but cranberry juice really can help to stop urinary tract infections (UTIs). A recent global study found that drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry supplements can reduce the risk of repeat UTIs in women by more than a quarter. In children and those who are susceptible to infections following medical interventions, the risk was cut by 53 percent.

UTIs are common and can affect the urinary tract, bladder, and kidneys. Symptoms include burning when urinating and needing to go to the toilet more often. They are often treated with antibiotics. Cranberry juice, however, can help to prevent UTIs from occurring in the first place.

Experts believe that cranberries are effective in preventing UTIs due to their high concentration of the antioxidant proanthocyanidin. This compound prevents the most common UTI-causing bacteria – E. coli – from sticking to the bladder wall.

The study, conducted at Flinders University in Australia, examined the results of 50 recent trials involving almost 9000 participants. While the juice was found to be effective in preventing UTIs in women, children, and those susceptible to infections following medical interventions, it was not effective in the elderly, pregnant women, or those with bladder-emptying problems.

Researchers warn that cranberries cannot cure an established UTI, so anyone who gets one must seek help from a GP or pharmacist.

Dr Gabrielle Williams, who led the study, said: “UTIs are horrible and very common – about a third of women will experience one. Even back in 1973, my mum was told to try cranberry juice to prevent her horrible and frequent UTIs and for her it’s been a saviour. She’s continued to take it daily. As soon as she stops, wham the symptoms are back. It turns out that mum was right!”

So, if you’re looking for a natural way to prevent UTIs, cranberry juice may be the answer. Just remember that it cannot cure an established UTI, so if you experience any symptoms, seek medical advice.
