Twitter CEO Elon Musk Thursday announced that ‘Subscriptions’ are now enabled on the platform — a way for people’s most engaged followers to help them earn money from Twitter for their contributions on the platform.
A Twitter user Shibetoshi Nakamoto, the creator of the popular cryptocurrency Dogecoin, recently took to the platform to ask for help with his account. Nakamoto said that he had been making contributions to the platform for years, but hadn’t been able to make much money from them.
Now, with subscriptions, Nakamoto said he could make a living from his tweets.
“Subscriptions are a way for people’s most engaged followers to help them earn money from Twitter for their contributions on the platform,” Musk said in a blog post.
Subscriptions will be available to all Twitter users starting today. People who sign up will be able to set a monthly donation amount, and their followers will be able to choose how much money to donate.
Nakamoto said that he was happy to hear the news.
“I’m really happy that we can finally make some money from our tweets,” Nakamoto said in a statement.
The subscription feature is part of Twitter’s efforts to make money from its platform. In February, Twitter announced that it was testing a new way for people to make money from their tweets. That feature, called ‘Promoted Tweets,’ lets brands pay to have their tweets displayed in people’s timelines.
Twitter has been struggling to make money from its platform. In 2016, the company lost more than $1 billion. But it has been trying to make changes to make money from its platform. In January, Twitter announced that it was testing a new feature that would let people buy ads that would be displayed in people’s timelines.
