Carey, who retired from his post in 2013, said that he was "somewhat surprised" when he was approached by Buckingham Palace about becoming the next Archbishop of Canterbury. He added: "I was quite happy to retire, but then I was asked to come back and I accepted." Carey, who has been married to his wife, Janet, for more than 40 years, revealed that he and Camilla had a "very animated conversation" about her future. He said: "I said to her: 'What do you want to do? Do you want to stay on as Duchess of Cornwall or do you want to go and talk to other people behind the scenes?' And she said: 'I don't know. I don't know what I want to do.' And I said: 'Well, I think you should talk to other people behind the scenes.'"

Carey, who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 2003 to 2013, will appear on The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor on ITVX on Sunday, October 22 at 9pm.
