Two crashes, 100km off the front and a front row seat on the Kwaremont
by David Tanner
It was a fairly typical day of racing at the Belgian Grand Prix. The sun was shining, the track was dry and the riders were out in force. As the race unfolded, there were a few skirmishes, but for the most part it was a relatively safe and orderly affair.
Then, with about 20 laps to go, disaster struck.
First, there was a crash in the midfield, involving several riders. This created some excitement, as it seemed like a good opportunity to make some points in the race. However, the crash was relatively minor and the race continued without incident.
Shortly afterwards, another crash – this time much worse – took place in the middle of the pack. This time, there were several riders involved and the race was stopped.
As the riders were brought back onto the track, it was clear that the race was over. The front row of the Kwaremont was now the scene of a horrific crash.
To watch the crash was to be in the front row of the carnage.
There were riders everywhere, some on the ground, some on their bikes, some writhing in pain.
It was a scene of utter carnage.
Fortunately, only a few riders were seriously injured in the crash. However, it was a terrifying experience for all those who were watching.
This was a truly shocking crash, 100km off the front and a front row seat on the Kwaremont.
