Prince Harry will attend the coronation of King Charles next month, but his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, will remain in the United States with the couple’s children, Buckingham Palace said Wednesday following months of speculation.
The couple’s youngest son, George, 4, and daughter, Charlotte, 2, will also stay in the U.S., the palace said.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to be able to spend some time with their children while they are in the United States,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said in a statement.
“They have been looking forward to this for a long time.”
The couple’s eldest child, Prince William, and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, are also in the U.K.
The duchess, who is due to give birth to their second child in May, will travel to the U.K. in time for the birth.
The duchess’s parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, will also travel to the U.K. to be with her.
The couple’s decision to leave their children behind has sparked months of speculation about their relationship.
The duchess has been outspoken about her desire to work and raise her children without the pressure of royal duties.
Harry, who is serving in the British Army, has also spoken about his desire to spend more time with his family.
The prince was previously scheduled to attend the coronation, but had to withdraw due to his military commitments.
The coronation, which is scheduled for April 23, will be the first time a member of the British royal family has attended since 1936.
