Stop Stomach Politics and False Solutions: The Turkish Gas-to-Power Supplier Will Not Solve the Energy Crisis in Soweto

Current World Trends

Key Highlights :

1. South Africa's leaders should stop pushing for stomach politics – where it is only about how much money they can chow - and start using their brains by not chasing false solutions that will destroy our environment and the future of our children.
2. Karpowership is a questionable project that is being falsely promoted as a viable solution to load shedding. It is likely to be expensive and may be harmful to the environment.
3. There are other ways to generate electricity, and just because we are poor does not mean the government can try to sign deals without proper consultations with us.
4. The Soweto Towers were formerly the Orlando Power Station and could be turned into a solar plant that would deal with our electricity issues and increase job opportunities for Sowetans.

The energy crisis in Soweto is a dire situation that requires a viable solution. Unfortunately, South Africa's leaders are pushing for stomach politics, which is only about how much money they can acquire, instead of using their brains to find solutions that will not destroy the environment and the future of our children. This is why the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee (SECC) and many Sowetans are against the Karpowership project, which is being falsely promoted as a solution to load shedding.

The Karpowership project is an expensive solution that will cost Sowetans R5 per unit of electricity, which is two to three times more expensive than renewable energy. For many Sowetans who struggle to even buy a loaf of bread for R19, the Karpowership project is simply unaffordable. The Turkish gas-to-power supplier will not solve this energy crisis.

The SECC is also concerned about the alleged corruption linked to this project. South Africa's leaders have already stolen money from the poor and sick during the Covid pandemic, and the SECC does not want Karpowership to be another way for them to enrich themselves. Gas is bad for the environment and our health and is a risky solution for our economy and job creation.

The SECC is advocating for other ways to generate electricity that are not as harmful to the environment and people's health. For example, the Soweto Towers used to be the Orlando Power Station, and the SECC believes it should be turned into a socially owned solar plant that will generate electricity and create job opportunities for Sowetans.

South Africa's leaders must stop pushing for stomach politics and false solutions that will only make the energy crisis in Soweto worse. They must listen to the SECC and the Sowetans and find solutions that are beneficial to the people and their environment. Ongazi makazi on how to stop this energy crisis! (Let the one who does not know how to stop the energy crisis be equipped on how to stop it.)
