A charity has moved a step closer to reviving a film theatre which dates back to the golden age of cinema after it was granted a licence to occupy the building.

The derelict building in the centre of the city was given a new lease of life after it was granted a licence to occupy by the council.

The theatre, which has been empty for years, is now in the process of being refurbished and will be open to the public in the near future.

The theatre was originally built in 1912 and was one of the first cinemas in the city.

It played host to some of the biggest stars of the time, including Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford.

The theatre was closed in the 1970s and has since been derelict.

The charity which has now been granted the licence to occupy the building is hoping that it will be a major attraction for the city and help to revive its economy.

The theatre is set to open its doors to the public in the near future and is sure to be a hit with visitors.
