A number of people have been injured as a result of the winds, with several hospitals reporting an increase in patients with injuries.
The rescue operation was launched after a woman was swept away in the high winds in Cumbria.
The woman, who has not been identified, was airlifted to hospital after being found unconscious in the River Eden.
A spokesman for the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “The woman was found in the river and was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
“The rescue operation involved a number of agencies, including the Cumbria Search and Rescue Team and the Coastguard.”
The Met Office has warned that the winds could last for several days.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: “We are warning that the wind speeds could increase again later today and into Sunday.
“This could lead to widespread damage, with the potential for catastrophic loss of life.”
The winds are expected to die down later today, but could pick up again on Monday.
