The coronation of King Charles III marks the beginning of a new chapter in England’s national story, and the Government has unveiled plans to commemorate the occasion with a lasting legacy. The longest national path in England will be renamed the ‘King Charles III England Coast Path’, and will be a 2,700-mile long walk around the whole of the English coast.

The path will connect communities between Northumberland to Cumbria, going via Cornwall, and will pass through some of the most stunning English countryside as well as internationally famous coast lines. Working alongside local authorities, Natural England has already opened 794 miles of the route so far, with the trail set to be fully walkable by the end of 2024.

The renaming of the path is an acknowledgement of King Charles’s love for England’s wildlife and rural places. During his time as the Prince of Wales, he frequently expressed his passion for walking and its role in promoting a healthy mind and body. Environment secretary Thérèse Coffey said: “The King is a dedicated champion of nature in our country. He spearheaded efforts to move to more environmentally friendly farming techniques and through his Prince’s Foundation has sought to highlight how education can foster responsible stewardship towards the planet and the natural environment.”

Alongside the coastal path, a new ‘King’s Series of National Nature Reserves’ will be created, with five nature reserves being added to the list for five years, making 25 in total. To celebrate the path’s gradual completion, events will be held across the UK throughout the summer of 2023.

The King Charles III England Coast Path will be officially unveiled on May 10, with the next two sections of the path opening in Filey, North Yorkshire and Crosby Beach, Liverpool. The Government’s plans to rename England’s longest national path are a fitting way to commemorate the coronation and to leave a lasting legacy for the public to enjoy around the entire English coastline.
