The Albert Road in Southsea is a peculiar place, with a monocled skull inviting passers-by in for a curious look. Head Case Curios is a shop unlike many in the Portsmouth area, and it stands out amongst the other stores with its unique range of items. From steampunk skulls to taxidermied creatures, postcards to chalices, and even a statue of a cat in an astronaut outfit, the shop has something for everyone.

Tony Duke, 58, has been the owner of Head Case since 2015. After working in mental health for 20 years, he decided to pursue his passion for weird and wacky antiques and turn it into a business. On his decision, Tony said: “If the candle’s not burning bright any more – don't do it your heart’s not in it.”

One of the biggest changes for Head Case was the expansion of the store into a tobacconist. This now makes up 70 per cent of the shop's sales, and it was becoming a tobacconist that saved Head Case during the Covid pandemic. With the store regularly closed, it became the only source of income via deliveries in the later lockdowns. Tony said: “I used all my savings up to float, there was nothing left coming out of Covid.”

However, Tony is now optimistic about Head Case Curios, believing its growing reputation for cigars, curios and crazy items will help it thrive. He said: “It’s been a rollercoaster, but I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved. We’re unique, and I think that’s why people are drawn to us.”

From assemblage art to statues of the demon Baphomet, Head Case Curios is a one-of-a-kind shop that is sure to draw in curious customers from near and far. Whether you’re looking for a unique gift or something strange to add to your collection, Head Case Curios is the place to go. So, if you’re ever in Southsea, be sure to take a look inside this peculiar shop and explore the weird and wonderful.
