The residents of Westhoughton have been left feeling relieved as plans have been agreed to resurface a road at the ‘end of its life’. Dobb Brow Road was in a bad state with patches and patches and patches and it had reached the end of its lifespan. The Westhoughton South Ward Areas Forum budget was able to scrape together enough money to get the job done.

Cllr David Wilkinson, a Liberal Democrat councillor, was pleased that the work was being done and hoped that other roads in the area would also be improved in the future. He said: “You only have to be driving for five minutes and you will realise there are lots of roads in the area which are in a bad way. Unfortunately, Dobb Brow Road has patches and patches and patches and it’s got to the end of its life. So, we had a bit of money in the Westhoughton South Ward Areas Forum budget, and we scraped a bit here and a bit there and we were able to get it done.”

Cllr Wilkinson understands the frustrations of residents as many roads have potholes in the area. He said: “I know we have potholes in many roads but that is one of the roads which has died a death. Residents seem quite pleased that it is going to be done and I wish I could give more good news to residents like that, but things are extremely difficult. I’m really pleased it is being resurfaced because it is one less to worry about.”

The cost of road construction nowadays is extremely high and it is difficult to stretch the budget to cover all of the roads in need of repair. Cllr Wilkinson said: “It is unbelievable the cost of road construction nowadays, it is absolutely frightening.”

The resurfacing of Dobb Brow Road is a relief for the Liberal Democrat councillors in Westhoughton and for the residents of the area. It is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to ensure that the roads in the area are safe and in good repair.

This is a reminder that it is important to maintain roads and to ensure that they are in good condition. It is also a reminder of the importance of having a budget set aside for road repairs and maintenance.
