Residents of Cleethorpes have been left scratching their heads after a receipt from a local Spar store suggested the business was located in South Yorkshire, despite the town being in North East Lincolnshire.

The confusion was sparked by a social media post which raised questions about why the store would claim to be located in a different county. But, as it turns out, there is a much simpler explanation.

The area of Grimsby and Cleethorpes come under a postcode beginning with DN, which is the same postcode used for Doncaster. This means that the address on the receipt is technically correct, but it has caused confusion among locals who are used to seeing their own postcode on receipts.

The post sparked a heated debate with people unsure as to which side to agree with. Comically, Keith Jimminson said: “We must have moved into Yorkshire overnight,” while Chris Wade added: “That will not do.”

Others, like Tracie Carr, reminisced about when North East Lincolnshire didn’t even exist, as the area was known as South Humberside between 1974 and 1996.

It isn’t just the Spar store in Hardy’s Road that claims to be in another county. It appears that the Spar store in North Sea Lane also has the same issue.

The problem, it seems, lies in the fact that the area comes under a Doncaster postcode. Michelle Mills, who is originally from Doncaster, said this is something that often causes an issue: “I’m originally from Doncaster but live in N.E.Lincs now. A couple of years ago, I went to a Post Office to send a small package to Doncaster with a DN3 postcode. I was told by a bemused assistant that I had missed a number off the postcode – they couldn’t comprehend what I was trying to explain to them.”

Kathy Sykes added sarcastically: “It’s because it has a Doncaster Post Code. We folk from South Yorkshire have been going to Cleethorpes for years so it’s quite nice for you to move Cleethorpes to a great county.”

It seems that the confusion surrounding the Spar store’s address is likely down to the postcode, and while it may have caused some consternation among locals, it is nothing to worry about. After all, Grimsby and Cleethorpes are still in North East Lincolnshire, regardless of the postcode.
