An Epic Year-Long Journey Around Scotland: Nick Ray's Story
Key Highlights :
Nick Ray had a unique plan for his 59th birthday – he wanted to embark on a year-long challenge to explore Scotland by sea. His plan was to set off on his small kayak, leaving from his home on Mull and circumnavigate Scotland’s coastline, relying on the wind and the tides. Although his wife Karen was “very understanding” of his plan, Nick was aware of the daunting prospect of spending so much time alone, especially for someone who has struggled with depression. But Nick wanted to use this journey to “celebrate life” and start conversations around mental health.
Nick has now been on his challenge for almost a year, having explored almost every inch of Scotland’s mainland coastline, as well as Skye and Raasay. He is currently making his way down the east coast, and plans to cross back across the country via the Forth and Clyde Canal, with the aim of making it back to Tobermory for his 60th birthday.
Nick’s journey has been one of “joyful solitude”, as he has enjoyed his own company when kayaking or camping. He has also been overwhelmed by the acts of kindness he has been shown across Scotland, with strangers coming to introduce themselves, invite him in for dinner, or leave him food by his tent.
Nick has also encountered some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery, including Skye and Loch Hourn, and he has seen a lot of wildlife, including otters, seals, and sea eagles. For anyone wanting to experience the best of wild Scotland, Nick recommends Arisaig as a good place to try kayaking, and Sannick Beach near Duncansby Head as a lovely beach with a nice campsite.
Nick’s journey is a testament to the power of adventure to help us overcome our fears and celebrate life. He has already started planning his next expedition, and he encourages others to explore Scotland’s stunning coastline and experience the joy of being in nature.
