"Exploring Tyler Rake's Return in Netflix's 'Extraction' Franchise"
Netflix's Extraction franchise is back with a bang, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Tyler Rake, the tough-guy mercenary with a heart of gold. Screenwriter Joe Russo and director Sam Hargrave have reunited to bring us another action-packed story, with Tyler's quasicorpse being discovered and given remedial attention in an outrageous montage at the beginning of the movie.
Tyler is flown in to save his ex-wife's sister and her kids from her abusive Georgian mob boss husband, with his ex-wife having enough money to bankroll the operation. Tyler's handler Nik Golshifteh Farahani is also back, doing a lot more actual fighting this time, including some close-quarters martial arts and stabbing bad guys in the thigh with a little serrated knife. Tyler also does a fair bit of dangling off the side of tall glass towers, although it's not quite on the same level as Tom Cruise's stunts.
Idris Elba also makes a cameo, cheerfully phoning it in as the guy who recruits Tyler for the new job, while Olga Kurylenko piteously emotes her way through a couple of short scenes as Tyler's ex-wife, who still has issues with the way Tyler treated her during their marriage. The first Extraction movie was entertaining enough, but this new one is a cynical attempt to extract cash from the franchise.
Tyler is determined to save the day, with his muppety-handsome features scrunched into an expression of determination with a soupcon of sensitivity. He has to battle his way through a variety of obstacles, including Georgian mob bosses and their henchmen, and the audience is treated to some spectacular action sequences.
It's clear that the Extraction franchise is here to stay, and fans of the first movie will no doubt be delighted to see Tyler Rake back in action. With Hemsworth and Farahani playing their parts to perfection, and Russo and Hargrave delivering another action-packed story, Extraction is sure to be a hit with audiences.
