Fatal Collision on Highway 3/93 Claims Three Lives

1. A logging truck was traveling westbound on Highway 3/93 when it experienced a mechanical failure, which caused it to cross the center line into eastbound traffic, striking a Chevrolet Suburban.
2. Three occupants of the Chevrolet Suburban were pronounced deceased at the scene and the driver of the logging truck was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
3. Highway 3/93 was closed for investigation however was re-opened by early evening.




     On June 1, tragedy struck on the highway near Cranbrook, BC when a loaded logging truck experienced a mechanical failure, causing it to cross the centre line into eastbound traffic and strike a Chevrolet Suburban. Tragically, the three occupants of the Chevrolet Suburban were pronounced deceased at the scene and the driver of the logging truck was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

     BC Highway Patrol – Cranbrook, Cranbrook RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), BC Coroner’s Service, Fire Rescue, Worksafe BC, and Ministry of Transportation were all in attendance to investigate the incident. Initial investigation has determined that the loaded logging truck was traveling westbound on Highway 3/93 when it experienced a mechanical failure, which caused it to cross the centre line into eastbound traffic, striking a Chevrolet Suburban. A third vehicle took evasive maneuvers, and went off the roadway.

     BC Highway Patrol – Cranbrook has conduct of the investigation with engagement from Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (BCHP – CARS), Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement and Worksafe BC. The highway was closed for most of the day while the on-scene investigation was conducted. No further details regarding the occupants of the vehicles are being released at this time. All avenues of investigation are being considered, RCMP reported.

     The incident serves as a reminder to all drivers to be cautious and alert when driving on highways, especially when driving around large commercial vehicles. Drivers should always be aware of their surroundings and be prepared to take evasive action if necessary. It is also important to make sure that all vehicles are properly maintained and inspected regularly to ensure they are in safe working order.
