The owners behind Fremantle breakfast institution Duck Duck Bruce have been left heartbroken after the cafe was denied a lease renewal. Despite the setback, the team are already making plans for a return and have hinted at their plans for the future.

James Wood, one of the co-owners of Duck Duck Bruce, told PerthNow this week that the team had decided to take a few months to look at their options and consider reopening somewhere else. The brunch hotspot has been a success since opening seven years ago, with lines often snaking down the street in a sign of how popular it had become.

Mr Wood said the team was proud of the Duck Duck Bruce cafe and what it had become for the Fremantle community. "At the end of the day, it’s quite a big chunk of our lives that we’ve put into it,” he said. “So to go out with our heads held high is really nice.”

The trio behind Duck Duck Bruce are also responsible for the South Asian inspired restaurant Lions and Tigers, which opened four years ago and is only a few streets away from the cafe. One possibility is that the popular breakfast menu could make an appearance at Lions and Tigers, “if the building permits”.

Mr Wood said the team was now planning to throw themselves into the restaurant, but they were also keen for a break and to bake “considerably less cakes at midnight before we go back in the morning”.

“We’ve got all these ideas about how to make the place warmer, brighter and more comfortable,” he said. “It’s time for us to put a bit more love into it.”

Despite the closure of Duck Duck Bruce, it's clear that the team behind the cafe have plenty of ideas for the future and are determined to make a return. We can only wait and see what the future holds for this Fremantle breakfast institution.
