Tasting Through 10 Frozen Confections: Which Ones Really Delivered?

Current World Trends

Key Highlights :

1. There are many different types of ice cream bars and cones that have been inspired by cookies and candy. Some are good, some are not so good.
2. The best ice cream bars and cones are ones that have a deep molasses-caramel flavor and are also chocolatey and peanut-flavored.
3. Some of the bad ice cream bars and cones have terrible flavors that are not at all like the original treats.

When it comes to candy bars, cookies, and other sweet treats, it can be hard to find the perfect frozen confection. We decided to take on the challenge and taste through 10 different frozen confections to find the four really good ones, and a few epic fails. From Reese's ice cream bars to Kit Kat cones to Snickers pops, we tried them all to see which ones truly delivered.

The Best of the Bunch: Biscoff Cookie Bar

This is the bar for caramel lovers. The deep molasses-caramel flavor of Biscoff cookies permeates both the ice cream and the thick coating of cookie-pocked chocolate. It's a cold, melty mouthful of deliciousness that captures all the yumminess of the original treat plus a creamy note that turns it into a luscious bite of dessert. At 310 calories, 21 g fat, 110 mg sodium, 23 g sugar, and 2 g protein per treat, it's a great way to indulge without overindulging. You can find it at Target for $3.56 for three 2.5-ounce bars. (4 stars)

     Snickers Fans Rejoice

Snickers fans will love these dreamy chocolate-peanut butter-caramel bars. A thick layer of caramel on top of rich, peanut-flavored ice cream makes for a candy bar-sized frozen treat that’s even more delicious and flavorful than its namesake. You'll get 180 calories, 11 g fat, 50 mg sodium, 15 g sugar, and 3 g protein per bar. Find it at Safeway for $4.50 for six 1.7-ounce bars. (4 stars)

     Milky Way Gets an Upgrade

Milk chocolate ice cream sandwiched with gooey caramel and wrapped in crunchy chocolate mimics a Milky Way, but this frozen version is actually better. It’s considerably more balanced in flavor than the uber-sweet candy bar. You'll get 180 calories, 9 g fat, 70 mg sodium, 20 g sugar, and 2 g protein per bar. Find it at Smart & Final for $3.99 for six 1.8-ounce bars. (3½ stars)

     The Epic Fails

Unfortunately, not all of the frozen confections we tried were winners. The gritty coating on these Oreo bars is a bit much, but they certainly deliver a big punch of Oreo texture and flavor in both the ice cream and the coating. You'll get 190 calories, 11 g fat, 80 mg sodium, 15 g sugar, and 1 g protein per bar. Find it at Safeway for $6.49 for five 1.9-ounce bars. (3 stars)

Reese's ice cream bar, Klondike Heath Bar, and Snickers pops were among the biggest disappointments. The Reese's bar had too little caramel and the cookie bits tasted wonky. The Klondike Heath Bar was loaded with toffee pieces, but the ice cream inside was plain and had a strange, fake fruity flavor. The Snickers pops lacked the peanut butter flavor of the original.

Our tasting experience taught us that when it comes to frozen confections, it's best to stick with the brands you know and love. The best versions deliver all of the yumminess of the original treat, plus a creamy note that turns it into a luscious bite of dessert. Bad branded ice cream treats simply don’t deliver. They may satisfy the sweet tooth, but they taste nothing like the candy or cookie that they are named after.
