How Poor Hygiene Standards at Southampton Takeaway Sals Kebab House Put Customers at Risk
Key Highlights :
When customers visit a takeaway, they expect to find clean and hygienic surroundings. Unfortunately, that was not the case at Sals Kebab House in Southampton, which was recently found to have mouldy chopping boards and a dirty toilet. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) inspected the premises on June 6 and gave it a one out of five hygiene rating.
The inspection revealed that the coloured chopping boards were heavily scored and mouldy. Although the owner claimed they were not in use, they were still present on the premises and therefore had to be taken into account. The floor covering in the wash-up area, food preparation area and the servery was also damaged and needed to be replaced or repaired.
The toilets were also not cleaned, and the walls, floor and door needed to be disinfected. The standard of cleaning of some of the food equipment was also found to be inadequate, with the floor standing mixer being dirty and the safety guard being ‘encrusted with old dough’. The takeaway was asked to carry out a thorough assessment to check for rodent entry points, although none were visible due to the items stored on the floor.
The report also 'strongly recommended' that the standards of housekeeping be improved after some of the stock in the walk-in chiller was found on the floor. Staff were asked to remove any items not used for food preparation and minimise the number of items stored.
The poor hygiene standards at Sals Kebab House put customers at risk of food poisoning and other illnesses. It is essential that all restaurants and takeaways adhere to the highest standards of cleanliness and food safety to ensure the safety of their customers. If a restaurant fails to meet these standards, they should be reported to the local council or the FSA.
