Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMIU) is a renowned educational institution located in New Delhi, India. It is one of the oldest universities in the country, and its Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhter has announced that the central government has given the permission to start a medical college in the university. This news was announced while speaking at the university’s ‘Centenary Year Convocation’ being held at the Vigyan Bhawan today.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar was the chief guest at the convocation ceremony, and around 12,500 students will reportedly be receiving their degrees at the convocation ceremony. Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan chaired the convocation ceremony. The varsity will be distributing degrees to students who graduated in the 2019 and 2020 batch of the university.

Najma Akhtar, while speaking at the ceremony, said, “We have dentistry, physiotherapy, first aid health centres, but a medical college has been missing in Jamia. As a VC, I have always requested for a medical college, on behalf of my students and faculty. We requested the government of India for the same, and now I am happy to announce that JMI has been granted the permission to establish a medical college at the campus.”

The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the Prime Minister, Education Minister, President and the Vice President of the country for helping them with this. She further mentioned that the university is planning to expand beyond the country and establish their centres at different places in the world, in line with the NEP 2020.

The central university has been striving hard in recent times to establish a medical college under its umbrella. Earlier in October last year, Jamia’s Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar urged the centre to grant approval to establish a medical college under the university. In response to the request, the Ministry of Education asked the university to submit details on the projection, vision and preparedness of the varsity to establish the medical college.

The news of the permission granted to Jamia Millia Islamia University to establish a medical college is a great achievement for the university and its students. It will not only help in providing better healthcare facilities to the people, but also provide a great opportunity to the students who are looking to pursue a career in the medical field.
