Jet, Iconic Gladiators Star, Reveals Electric Moment Her Future Wife Asked Her Out in a Supermarket
Key Highlights :
Gladiators icon Jet, whose real name is Diane Youdale, recently revealed that she is engaged to her girlfriend Zoe, a year after they randomly met in a Tesco supermarket. Diane, 53, described feeling 'winded' and that she nearly 'fell on the floor' after Zoe approached her to ask her out.
Diane, who was a popular star on the 90s TV show, told The Sun that it was in aisle six of Tesco that Zoe asked her out. She said, “It was like that feeling when your knees give way, I felt winded.” Diane immediately said ‘yes’ and that weekend the pair headed to a pub date in a local village and have “not been apart” ever since.
What’s more, Diane proposed to Zoe just four months into their relationship. She said, “I knew in my heart I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life, and I proposed. It wasn’t very romantic, I should have gone back to Tesco’s and made an event of it. I was in the kitchen and said, ‘I know we are going to be together forever so why don’t we make it official - let’s get married.’”
Diane had previously been in a relationship with former Gladiators co-star Hunter, James Crossley. She then went on to marry TV exec George Mayhew, whom she was with for seven years before their amicable split.
During her time as the glamorous Jet on the 90s TV show, Diane said that her sexuality had changed ‘organically’ and there was never a moment where she actually ‘came out’. She said, “Growing up in showbusiness and moving to London at 16, I’ve always lived around gay men and women but I’ve never thought about it for me personally. And I wasn’t attracted to women in my twenties and thirties. I wasn’t really conscious of who I was attracted to. It’s always been, and always will be, about the person.”
Diane added that her attraction comes down to the person and their ‘beautiful soul’ and that Zoe is the first female she’s been with and that she’s the ‘happiest I’ve ever been.’
The former Gladiators star concluded that she chooses to spend her time with non-judgmental people, adding that she cannot put people ‘in boxes’ or ‘label’ them.
Diane’s story is a reminder to us all that love comes in all shapes and sizes and that no matter who we are, we all deserve to find the person that makes us the happiest.
