Red Bull's Brutal Sacking of Nyck de Vries from AlphaTauri Criticised by Sebastian Vettel
Key Highlights :
Red Bull have been widely criticised for their sudden decision to sack Nyck de Vries from his role at AlphaTauri after just half a season. Formula One legend Sebastian Vettel, who won four consecutive world titles during his time with Red Bull, has called the team's actions "brutal" and believes De Vries should have been given more time to make a name for himself in F1.
The 28-year-old Dutch driver was released from his contract with AlphaTauri, who are owned by Red Bull, after the British Grand Prix. He has been replaced at AlphaTauri by Daniel Ricciardo, who was promoted from his role as Red Bull's reserve driver. Ricciardo will now aim to push AlphaTauri up the Constructors' Championship, as they currently sit rock bottom in 10th.
Vettel, who retired from F1 at the end of last year after spells with Ferrari and Aston Martin, was asked for his opinion on De Vries' dismissal while speaking to ITV. He said: "I have to be honest, it’s obviously a shame for Nyck. The way it came to an end. I think he got given a great chance, maybe things didn’t happen for him the way he expected or people expected but it’s also a bit harsh when it comes to a very sudden stop. It’s brutal. I met him last year for the first time and he seemed like a really good person and he is a good driver. He won the F2 championship, he won international championships so he’s well recognised and I hope that this doesn’t put a dent in his confidence."
Vettel also expressed his happiness for Ricciardo, who was his team-mate at Red Bull during the 2014 season. The 34-year-old Australian was forced to accept a role as Red Bull's reserve driver after finding himself without a seat at the beginning of the season but is now set to make his comeback. Vettel added: "I’m very happy for Daniel. Very happy. I like him. Obviously I’ve raced with them and I met him at the test when I was shaking down the McLaren for this weekend [at the Goodwood Festival of Speed]."
Red Bull's decision to axe De Vries has been met with a lot of criticism, and it's clear that the team's actions have not gone down well with Vettel. It remains to be seen whether Ricciardo will be able to help AlphaTauri move up the Constructors' Championship, but one thing is for sure - De Vries will be hoping to find another F1 seat for the 2021 season.
