Summer is officially here, and with it comes the rise of the Hugo spritz, a refreshing aperitif that TikTok has declared to be the drink of the summer. Created in South Tyrol, Italy in 2005 by Roland Gruber, the Hugo spritz has become a favorite among cocktail connoisseurs due to its light, crisp, and fizzy body. With an ABV of only 4-5%, it's a great drink to make for yourself or a crowd without having to worry about getting too messy.

The Hugo spritz is made with elderflower liqueur, prosecco, club soda or sparkling water, lime, and mint. Elderflower liqueur is made from the white flowers of the elderflower bush and is a fragrant bundle of fruity, floral, and light flavors, perfect for summertime. It's a sweeter, juicier, and airy drink than its more citrusy, slightly bitter, and a tad overrated cousin, the Aperol spritz.

Making a Hugo spritz is easy and doesn't require any fancy gadgets. Start with an empty glass half filled with ice, then add a half ounce of elderflower liqueur. Pop the top off of your preferred bottle of prosecco and pour four ounces into the glass, followed by club soda or sparkling water. Give it a nice stir, then garnish with a wedge of lime and two mint leaves in the drink, then another lime wedge to adorn the glass rim.

Tasting the Hugo spritz for the first time, I was immediately surprised by how light and refreshing it was. It had just the perfect touch of sweetness, fruity and bright notes, and tasted so crisp. The prosecco left a gentle, boozy kiss, and I could easily picture myself sitting poolside, a book in one hand and a Hugo spritz in the other, just sipping the day away. As I let the drink sit, the zest from the lime mixed with the mint began to shine brighter and brighter, making the Hugo more refreshing and invigorating as time went on.

Is the Hugo spritz this summer's Queen Bee? At least to me, it definitely is. As someone's who's tried to be a cocktail girly time and time again, I haven't sipped on something as lovely as this Hugo in a hot minute! It's fun, it's affordable, it's party-friendly, and it's simply a staple aperitif. Aperol spritz, sweetie, you can sit this season out. Try out the Hugo spritz for yourself and let me know how you feel in the comments! Is it the drink of the summer, or is there some other boozy concoction aiming to reign? Salute!
