Eau de vie, the star of the show, is a clear, colourless fruit brandy that is made from fermented fruit juice. At the Gothic Bar, this drink is used both seriously and with a gleeful sense of silliness, as evidenced by the Bloomsbury Club, a cocktail that combines eau de vie with gin and raspberry syrup, topped with coconut and white chocolate foam.
The drinks menu is full of potent and propelling martinis, lethal concoctions such as the Omens Warning (scotch, Campari, amaro montenegro, and a touch of banana) and Diablo’s Descent (tequila, yellow tomato, sage leaf, chipotle wine, agave syrup, soda, and spritz of olive distillate), and the Thirsty Gargoyle (apricot brandy, sloe gin, lime, and hint of cinnamon). For a unique twist, there is a riff on a bloody pickleback - a Bloody Mary with pickle juice.
The bar is run by the talented Jack Porter, with the help of the impeccable service of General Manager Emma Underwood. The atmosphere of the bar is one of moody surrounds and candlelight, but there is also a lightness and fun that makes the Gothic Bar a truly unique and enjoyable experience.
