Dr Mariam Awatai began her medical career in Moscow, Russia, where her parents were posted as Nigerian diplomats. She then moved to Nigeria, where she obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Lagos. In addition she holds the following postgraduate qualifications: FRCOG, Dip. RCR/ RCOG, DFFP and CCT from the United Kingdom.
Inspired and motivated to pursue a career in the medical industry due to her professors, she commenced her career at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. She then moved to the UK in 1993 and spent the next 21 years working in a number of renowned hospitals in London.
Dr Mariam Awatai’s career in the United Arab Emirates began in 2012 when she accepted a headhunting offer to serve as a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chair of Clinical Audit and Quality Improvement at the Corniche Hospital for Women and Children in Abu Dhabi. She then took the position of Department Head Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Burjeel Marina in Abu Dhabi in 2016, where she transformed the new clinic facility into a flourishing division.
Two years later, Dr Mariam Awatai was headhunted again as Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dr Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Dubai. Here, she developed her newly established department into a thriving Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic. Later, in 2020, she relocated to Dubai’s Gargash Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology department, where she continued to use her expertise and talents to establish a new facility by attracting women and families in her unique and respected manner.
In 2023, Dr Mariam Awatai established her own obstetrics and gynecology practice in Dubai. She created a thriving facility where women feel welcomed and comfortable in the care of the clinic using her +30 years of experience in medicine, teaching clinical auditing, management, and administration. She now leads a team of outstanding healthcare professionals who work to advance women’s health.
Dr Mariam Awatai has had a long and distinguished career in the medical field, with several noteworthy professional milestones. One of the many outstanding accomplishments she achieved is receiving recognition and a Fellowship award from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, UK for her contributions to women’s healthcare in the UK and overseas. Additionally, she has been honored with the prestigious “Susheela John Awards” and “Best Educator of the Year SEHA” awards, and she is known among her peers nationally as well as internationally for her expertise in medicine.
English, French, Russian, Ibo, Hausa, and Yoruba are among the languages that Dr Mariam Awatai is fluent in. She has also published key papers in medical journals, and she frequently speaks and participates in conferences and courses. She is continuing to have an impact on women and families by supporting philanthropic initiatives for women and children and ensuring that they receive safe, supportive, and individualized care from menarche to menopause.
