Debate Over Proposal to Build Houses on Former School Site to Take Place Next Week
Key Highlights :
The debate over a proposal to build 27 homes on the former Eden Boys School site in Halliwell is set to take place next week. The project involves cutting down nine of the existing 14 trees in the area, but the planting of another 20.
A Bolton Council report said: “The site is that of the former Falcon View Learning Disability Service Centre but was most recently as a temporary school, Eden Boys. “The building has now been demolished with only the hard surfaced areas and foundations remaining. A total of 27 new homes have been proposed.”
The new houses, all of which will be classified as “affordable” will be made up of 19 two storey terraced houses and eight “cottage apartments.”
The area has previously been used as the Falcon View Learning Disability Service Centre but was more recently adapted as the temporary site of the Eden Boys School. The school has since moved to its new home on Wolfenden Street leaving the Cotton Street site empty.
Since then, several new trees have grown along with greenery across the site. So far only one letter of objection has been received from a resident on Halliwell Road who has raised concerns about overlooking and the potential loss of light. But Bolton Council officers have recommended that elected councillors delegate the decision to the authority’s director of place.
The vote will take place at a meeting of the planning committee at Bolton Town Hall on Thursday August 17. The proposal has been met with mixed opinions, with some believing it would be beneficial for the area while others are concerned about the loss of trees and potential for overlooking.
The debate will provide an opportunity for those for and against the proposal to express their views and for councillors to make an informed decision. The outcome of the debate could have a significant impact on the future of the local area and it is expected to be a lively discussion.
