Liverpool's Desperate Need for a Defensive Midfielder Could See Them Pursue Manchester United's Top Target
Key Highlights :
Liverpool's search for a defensive midfielder has become increasingly urgent in recent weeks, with their attempts to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia both ending in failure. Now, the Reds have set their sights on Fiorentina and Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, with Jurgen Klopp's side reportedly prepared to rival Manchester United for the 26-year-old's signature.
Amrabat played a key role in Morocco's run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, and his performances have attracted the attention of a number of top clubs. According to Dutch newspaper , Liverpool and Serie A giants Inter Milan are both interested in a move for the former Club Brugge, Feyenoord and Utrecht man.
Fiorentina are said to value Amrabat at €30m (£25.6m), which is roughly in line with the price tag they placed on him when they signed him from Hellas Verona for €20m three-and-a-half years ago. Liverpool shouldn't have any trouble affording Amrabat: they had a British-record £111m bid for Caicedo accepted by last week (only for the midfielder to insist on joining Chelsea).
However, unlike Manchester United, Liverpool will not be in the Champions League this season – and that could rather dilute the appeal of a switch to Anfield. Klopp's side will be hoping that the prospect of regular first-team football and the chance to work with one of the best managers in world football will be enough to persuade Amrabat to make the move to Merseyside.
