Callum Mills Sidelined Until Start of Next AFL Season After Mad Monday Injury
Key Highlights :
The Sydney Swans have been dealt a major blow with captain Callum Mills sidelined for the remainder of the 2020 AFL season and likely the start of the 2021 season due to an injury he sustained in a Mad Monday wrestle with a teammate.
Mills, 26, reportedly injured his rotator cuff in the incident and has since undergone surgery. According to the Swans, the injury was not severe but he will be out of action for several months, and at worst, he might not play again until midway through next season.
The Swans have expressed their disappointment at the injury, with football boss Charlie Gardiner stating in a statement: “Losing players to injury in the off-season is always disappointing. Callum is our captain and an important member of the squad. We are extremely disappointed this injury has occurred.”
Mills has been a key player for the Swans since his debut in 2016, initially playing in the half-back line before transitioning to the midfield. He missed most of the 2018 season due to a bizarre accident in which he tripped and fell while throwing an American football with teammates on their way back from a cafe.
The Swans finished eighth in the 2020 season and were knocked out by Carlton in the elimination final. With their captain now sidelined until at least the start of next season, the Swans will need to look for other players to step up and lead the team.
Mills’ injury is a huge blow for the Swans, but the team will remain hopeful that he will make a full recovery and be able to return to the field at the start of next season. In the meantime, the Swans will need to focus on rebuilding the team and finding the right players to lead them in the 2021 season.
