Google and the Department of Defense Team Up to Create AI-Powered Augmented Reality Microscope

Key Highlights :

1. Google has created a prototype AI-powered microscope that is designed to assist doctors in locating potentially cancerous cells and other pathogens.
2. The new type of microscope has heads-up-display (HUD) capabilities such as heatmaps, visual indicators, and object borders - all of which speed up the identification process conducted by doctors.
3. Notably, the ARM microscope first came into the public eye in 2018 and has not been tested on patients with the purpose of diagnosis.
4. Google has designed 13 prototypes of the new device, and according to reports, substantial clinical studies still need to be conducted before ARM can be rolled out to potentially thousands of doctors.
5. However, once the necessary studies have been completed and the results lead to a green light, ARM will be rolled out to hospitals and clinics.

Google and the Department of Defense have teamed up to develop a prototype of an Augmented Reality Microscope (ARM) designed to identify cancer cells. The new type of microscope is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and has heads-up-display (HUD) capabilities such as heatmaps, visual indicators, and object borders which speed up the identification process conducted by doctors. Google has created 13 prototypes of the ARM microscope and has plans to retrofit existing microscopes with the attachment.

The Department of Defense has plans to purchase a selection of the ARM attachments, with each costing between $90,000 and $100,000. This high price tag may prevent hospitals from purchasing the ARM microscope, but the military is expected to receive some this fall. Before the ARM microscope can be rolled out to hospitals and clinics, substantial clinical studies still need to be conducted.

The ARM microscope was designed with the intention of assisting doctors in locating potentially cancerous cells and other pathogens. If the necessary studies are completed and the results lead to a green light, the ARM microscope could be used in hospitals and clinics to help doctors identify cancer cells more quickly. Google and the Department of Defense are working together to make this a reality.
