Introducing the Next Generation of Laptops: Foldable Tech is Here
Key Highlights :
With the recent surge in popularity of foldable smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Flip and Fold or Google's Pixel Fold, it was only a matter of time before foldable technology made its way to laptops. And sure enough, the big names in the laptop industry have started to introduce foldable laptops to the market, giving us a more functional and fun alternative to the traditional clamshell.
From the first touchscreen laptops to the convertible laptops that can rotate 360-degrees, laptop makers have been experimenting with ways to innovate on the traditional design for more than a decade. Now, with foldable laptops, we’re seeing the next step in laptop design evolution. The added bonus of foldable laptops is that they have all the convertibility of previous designs while adding more screen space, giving us double the screen and double the fun.
The first foldable laptop to hit the market was Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold, which was released in 2020. This was followed by Asus’ ZenBook Flip S and now LG and HP have joined the foldable laptop market with their own offerings. The LG Gram Fold is exclusive to Korea and will cost around five million Korean won, or around $3,700, and the HP Spectre Foldable PC starts at $5,000.
At these prices, foldable laptops are still a luxury item and may not be the right choice for everyone. But if you’re looking for something different from the traditional clamshell laptop, then foldable displays are the way to go. With display technology getting better and better and major laptop makers signing onto the trend, we’re bound to see more options in the near future.
