Major Road Reworking Project to be Completed Over the Next Year
Key Highlights :
The Streets for All scheme in Farnworth is set to be part of a wider regeneration of the town, with the “bulk of work” expected to be done over the next year according to the latest estimates. The scheme aims to widen the streets around the Market Street area to make them more attractive to visitors, with wider pavements, smoother surfaces and improved drainage, as well as traffic management measures and more greenery with trees being planted along the way.
At a meeting of Bolton Council this month, council cabinet member for planning, housing and highways, Cllr Hamid Khurram said he expected construction work to be tendered later this year, with the “bulk of the work” expected to be carried out next year. The first phase is planned to take place from King Street to Frederick Street, while the second phase will extend the scheme to Gladstone Road and South Longcauseway, which is currently in the “outline design” phase.
The works for the second phase are expected to be tendered in late 2024 and to be delivered in 2025, but this is dependent on a full business case approval process. The Streets for All scheme is intended to follow on from the Farnworth town centre masterplan and aims to encourage more people to visit the shops and businesses around Market Street.
At a full meeting of Bolton Council earlier this month, Cllr Khurram had been responding to questions put by Cllr Paul Sanders, of Farnworth South, who had been standing in for his colleague Cllr Maureen Flitcroft. He had called for an “overarching update” on the “much anticipated” scheme. Cllr Khurram said that the scheme was being monitored by council leader Cllr Nick Peel.
The Streets for All scheme is an important part of the regeneration of Farnworth, and the council is committed to making Farnworth a better place to live. The plans setting out the Streets for All scheme are available to view, and the council is keen to ensure that the people of Farnworth are kept informed of the progress of the scheme.
