The 2023 Dally M Awards: NRL's Best and Brightest Shine on the Red Carpet
Key Highlights :
The 2023 Dally M Awards have kicked off with a bang, as some of the NRL’s brightest stars and their glamorous partners have begun to arrive on the red carpet. Award favourites Nathan Cleary and Payne Haas are yet to make their appearance, but big hitters like David Fifita, Haumole Olakau'atu and Bradman Best have already made their way into the league’s night of nights.
Penrith coach Ivan Cleary was also seen on the red carpet, looking cool and collected with his wife Rebecca by his side. There is still no sign of his son Nathan Cleary, who is a contender for the Dally M Medal this year. Popular presenters such as Lara Pitt and Jess Yates also joined the players and partners on the green carpet, adding to the star-studded atmosphere.
The NRLW was also well represented, with Rooster’s captain Isabelle Kelly looking stunning in a vivid pink dress and matching gloves. Bradman Best made the night extra special by bringing along his mother Tobi, a sweet gesture that was well received by the crowd.
This year’s Dally M Awards have seen some major changes to the voting process, with two independent judges each giving three points per game to who they believe is the best on field. A judge will then give two points to the second-best player and one to the third-best. This means a player who is five points behind could move ahead of the leader if they are given six points by the two judges.
Scoreboards are made public up until Round 12 before going into voting behind closed doors for Round 13, creating anticipation for the NRL’s night of nights. After Round 12, Payne Haas was the clear favourite on the Dally M Leaderboard, scoring 30 points. He was followed closely by Nathan Cleary with 27 points, Harry Grant and Nicho Hynes who had 25 points each, and Reece Walsh who had 24 points.
Awards for best player in each position are voted on throughout the season, however if a player ends up in the top three for the main Dally M Award they are automatically selected as best in their position. Those who are suspended for at least two games become ineligible to earn a Dally M nomination.
The title for most Dally M Medals ever won goes to Johnatha Thurston, who won four during his time with the Cowboys. With the night still young, it’s anyone’s guess who will be crowned this year’s Dally M Medal winner. But one thing is for sure: the 2023 Dally M Awards are sure to be a night to remember.
