Enjoying Delicious Dining at Forbes of Kingennie: Cat Thomson's Anniversary Celebration

Key Highlights :

1. The restaurant is cosy and contemporary with rustic elm tables and comfy leather chairs.
2. The car park outside was busy when we arrived.
3. Our food arrived quickly and was delicious. My meat-free burger was juicy and the sesame-seeded roll was soft. The accompanying salad came with a dressing that we both remarked was particularly tasty.
4. My husband’s second choice of sriracha spiced chicken burger was just as tasty.
5. The sriracha burger also came with cos lettuce, sliced tomato and pickled gherkins, and the accompanying skinny Cajun fries were plentiful and well-seasoned.

We are lucky enough to live on the outskirts of Dundee and, as the crow flies, Forbes of Kingennie is our “local” restaurant. With small children, however, big nights out are few and far between. But for our anniversary, we wanted to enjoy a meal out as a couple, so we booked a table at Forbes of Kingennie and took advantage of their Burger Thursday offer.

On arrival, we were glad we had booked as the car park was busy and the restaurant was bustling. We were shown to our table by a friendly member of staff and a chilled bottle of tap water was brought over almost immediately. The restaurant felt cosy yet contemporary, with coppery tones of decor, rustic elm tables, and comfy leather chairs. Despite the full tables, we didn’t feel crowded and were able to enjoy the picturesque view of the lochans outside as dusk fell.

The menu is more meat and fish-focused, but I’d rather see a smaller selection done well than a bigger menu of mediocre meals. And on this point, Forbes of Kingennie did deliver. I chose the Moving Mountains plant-based burger, served with cos lettuce, sliced tomato, pickled gherkins, and vegan mayonnaise in a burger bun. I asked the server if I could have regular mayo instead of vegan mayo, and it was no issue. She also offered me coleslaw, which I accepted happily. I opted for chunky chips, while my husband chose Cajun fries, and we both added caramelised onions to our burgers.

My meat-free burger was juicy and the sesame-seeded roll was soft. The sweet, sticky caramelised onions inside the bun were a welcome addition, and the accompanying salad had a tasty dressing. The chunky chips were perfectly fluffy on the inside. My husband’s sriracha spiced chicken burger was juicy and on the right side of spicy, and the accompanying skinny Cajun fries were plentiful and well-seasoned.

Despite being somewhat full, we were still in the mood for a dessert, so I went for sticky toffee pudding and my husband chose the Biscoff cheesecake. My sticky toffee pudding was dark and treacly and paired well with the Chantilly cream and honeycomb ice cream. The Biscoff cheesecake was quite subtle in taste, but my husband enjoyed the accompanying ice cream and Chantilly cream.

We had a great night and ate some delicious food for a very reasonable price. The cheery staff definitely made the night for us – nothing was too much trouble for them. We enjoyed two glasses of wine and two pints of Staropramen lager, and finished off with two indulgent desserts. All in all, it was a wonderful evening and we would highly recommend Forbes of Kingennie for a delicious dining experience at a reasonable price.
