Islamabad - Pakistan yesterday condemned the “highly irresponsible” remarks made by the Indian Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath about taking back ‘Sindhu’ -the region around the Indus River in Southern Pakistan, saying the provocative remarks were inspired by the gratuitous assertion of ‘Akhand Bharat.’
The Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in a statement that the Chief Minister’s remarks were “highly irresponsible” and “manifest a revisionist and expansionist mindset that seeks to subjugate the identity and culture of not only India’s neighbouring countries but also its own religious minorities.”
The statement further said that the “so-called reclamation of the ‘Ram Janmabhoomi’ has been cited by the Chief Minister as a template for reclaiming the region that constitutes part of Pakistan.” It further highlighted that history bore witness that a Hindu supremacist mob had brazenly demolished the historic Babri Mosque on 6 December 1992 to take back the claimed birthplace of Lord Rama in Ayodhya.
The statement went on to say that India’s “neighbouring countries have the right to protect their sovereignty, territorial integrity and dignity” and that “such irresponsible statements should be avoided in the future.”
Pakistan has been vocal about its stance against India’s attempts to annex the region of Sindhu and has urged the international community to take note of the “provocative and irresponsible” remarks made by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
The statement concluded by saying that Pakistan “calls upon the international community to take notice of India’s attempts to annex the region of Sindhu and to take appropriate measures to ensure that India does not violate international law and norms.”
It is clear that India’s attempts to annex the region of Sindhu are in violation of international law and norms and that Pakistan will continue to oppose such actions. Pakistan has a right to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity and dignity and any attempts to undermine this right will be met with firm resistance.
