Key Highlights :

1. Veterans Day is on a Saturday this year.
2. There are ceremonies and events happening at various locations around the state.
3. There are also free events taking place, including a music festival and a museum exhibit.

This year Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, making it the perfect opportunity to honor our nation’s soldiers with a visit to the official Veterans Day Parade and Festival, hosted by Colorado Veterans Project. The event takes place at City Park on November 11th and includes a 5k or 10k run, a parade, live music, activities for kids and families, military displays and vendors, and food trucks.

In addition to the festivities at City Park, you can also join the celebration at the 10th Mountain Division Museum in Denver. On November 11th, the museum will be opening its new exhibit, “The 10th Mountain Division: A Legacy of Valor”, with a 1940s-themed reception. Enjoy a live band playing 1940s-era music, cocktails and food while being one of the first to see this new gathering of historic artifacts related to the 10th Mountain Division and Camp Hale (which recently became a National Monument).

The 10th Mountain Division was the U.S. Army’s first winter warfare division and they trained right here in Colorado at Camp Hale, located in the mountains behind what is now Vail. During WWII, they used their skills to score an important victory in the mountains of Italy. The opening night reception at the museum is free and open to the public with an RSVP at 10thmountainmuseum.org. Entrance to the museum thereafter is $15.

If you’re looking for a way to honor Veterans Day with a unique experience, head to Boulder’s Firefly Handmade Market on November 11th and 12th. More than 80 artisans will fill the streets with locally made art, crafts and design, including a special booth with sustainable products created by Environmental Design students from the University of Colorado. The festival runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and is free to attend.

Finally, celebrate the music of the Beastie Boys at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox on November 11th and 12th. DJ Boyhollow and DJ Eli from Lipgloss will be behind the decks from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, while Boyhollow and DJ Kitty Vincent will spin tunes on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy visuals of the Beastie Boys, band member side projects, solo works and covers while dining on any of Ophelia’s brunch items and cocktails (or mocktails). Reservations are highly recommended.

This Veterans Day, take some time to honor our nation’s soldiers with a visit to the 10th Mountain Division Museum, the Firefly Handmade Market and a Beastie Boys brunch at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox.
