Ensuring Respectful Surroundings and Dignified Living Conditions for Displaced Slum Residents
Key Highlights :
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has displaced people from slums in Kalwa and temporarily housed them in rental colonies. However, the tenants waiting for their redeveloped houses are facing hellish conditions, despite paying rent to the TMC. Leakages, overflowing drains, lack of sanitation and zero maintenance are some of the issues that the residents are facing. To ensure that these people are not deprived of their basic rights, it is essential that everyone respects the surroundings and maintains cleanliness and hygiene.
First and foremost, every resident must ensure that they use the surroundings respectfully, by keeping them clean and stowing away rubbish and litter. The escalators must be maintained and in good condition to ensure mobility and safety for senior citizens. There should be enough sanitation personnel to maintain hygiene standards and prevent choked drains. The authorities should also ensure that there is enough light in the common areas of these buildings. This will not only ensure safety but also help maintain the dignity of the residents.
In addition, the authorities should take quick action to unclog the drains and identify and tackle the root cause of the problem, so that it does not become a recurring malaise. This should be done through ground visits and a meeting with some resident representatives. If there is any merit in the complaints, then the authorities should act upon it without delay.
Everyone deserves to live with dignity and in safety. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure that the displaced slum residents are provided with basic amenities and dignified living conditions. This can be achieved by ensuring respectful surroundings and maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the rental colonies.
