Foreign Affairs Minister Demonstrates Moral Consistency By Condemning All Forms of Prejudice
Key Highlights :
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong recently addressed the Senate, emphasizing her commitment to showing “moral consistency” by condemning all forms of prejudice. In her speech, Minister Wong focused on the importance of promoting multicultural cohesion and understanding.
When pressed on why she wouldn’t call for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, Minister Wong stated, “We have seen a considered and careful response by the Australian government through foreign minister Wong pushing towards the sort of outcomes that I think every Australian was to see.”
She went on to explain that she had spent a great deal of time engaging with Australians who have a close personal connection to the conflict, including Palestinians, Jews, and members of the wider Arab and Muslim communities. She expressed her deep distress at the conversations she had with all these individuals.
Minister Wong then discussed the Australian government’s consistent position to call for the protection of civilian lives and the observance of international law. She also condemned all forms of hate speech and urged people in positions of leadership to exercise that leadership in a responsible way.
She also condemned the decision by some to have a demonstration in Caulfield and the decision to ride motorbikes through the eastern suburbs of Sydney, noting that such provocations are not helpful at this time.
Minister Wong’s comments come as the world is increasingly divided by issues of prejudice and hatred. Her words serve as a reminder of the importance of showing moral consistency when it comes to condemning all forms of prejudice. By taking a firm stance against any form of bigotry, we can help ensure that our society is more inclusive and tolerant.
