"Matt Lowton Joins Eighth Tier Club Witton Albion After Premier League Career"
Key Highlights :
Matt Lowton has ended his search for a new club by signing for Northern Premier League club Witton Albion, who play in the eighth tier of English football. Lowton, 34, has racked up more than 230 appearances in the Premier League over spells with Burnley and Aston Villa, but is now set to turn out for the Albs at the U Lock It Stadium - formerly the Bargain Booze Stadium.
The former defender isn't the only former Premier League star at Witton, as the club is managed by ex-Manchester City ace Jon Macken. Macken, who also played for Preston North End and the Republic of Ireland, has been in charge since 2022.
Lowton began his career at Sheffield United, emerging from their academy in 2008. He was then loaned out to Sheffield FC and Ferencvaros before sealing a £3million switch to Aston Villa in 2012. After three seasons at Villa Park he moved to Burnley, who were in the Championship at the time. The Clarets sealed promotion to the Premier League in Lowton's first season and he quickly established himself as one of Sean Dyche's most reliable players.
He racked up over 200 appearances for Burnley but was released at the end of the 2022/23 campaign following half-a-season on loan at Huddersfield, where he played just eight times. Lowton then had trials at the likes of Birmingham and Stockport, but didn't impress enough to be offered a contract.
Macken and Lowton are now set to work together at Witton, where Lowton will look to make an impact on the pitch. Witton Albion are currently in the middle of the Northern Premier League table, and will be hoping the experienced Lowton can help them push for promotion. With his Premier League pedigree, Lowton could be the perfect man to help the Albs reach the next level.
