The Future of E-hailing Business in Nigeria: Country Manager, Bolt Nigeria, Yahaya Mohammed, Speaks with JUSTICE OKAMGBA
Key Highlights :
The e-hailing industry has seen a surge of competition in Nigeria, especially from other e-hailing companies. But Nigeria is a massive market with a growing urban population, and the demand for transportation services continues to increase. Bolt Nigeria's Country Manager, Yahaya Mohammed, recently sat down with JUSTICE OKAMGBA to discuss the challenges confronting the e-hailing industry, how the company has been tackling unethical offline practices among drivers, and what the future of e-hailing business in Nigeria looks like.
According to Mr. Mohammed, the market size for Bolt Nigeria is good, and they are able to meet up with the current demand. To mitigate the challenge of drivers using Corolla brand of cars becoming targets for criminals, the company has implemented safety features on their app such as audio recording, SOS emergency service, and rider and driver verification. They are also looking towards having life insurance available for their drivers to provide that level of coverage.
When asked about the complaints from drivers about low earnings, Mr. Mohammed said that despite the state of the economy and the increase in fuel prices, they are able to provide the right bonuses for drivers by subsidising the commission for each trip. He also noted that Bolt Nigeria discourages offline trips as it puts both riders and drivers at risk of not having access to the safety features of the app.
Finally, Mr. Mohammed spoke about car financing schemes for Nigerians who want to be on the Bolt platform but do not have the financial power to own a car. He said that they work with partners to implement car matching, as well as programmes to help with sourcing vehicles and providing them with a drive. He also spoke about electric vehicles, saying that Bolt is dedicated to reducing private car ownership, congestion, and pollution in many cities, and they are looking into EVs to provide higher earnings for drivers, as well as lower operating and maintenance costs.
In conclusion, the e-hailing industry in Nigeria has a bright future, with Bolt Nigeria leading the way in tackling the challenges confronting the industry. The company is dedicated to providing a safe, reliable, and affordable service for riders and drivers, and they are looking into car financing schemes and electric vehicles to provide more opportunities for those who want to join the platform.
