The Grim Reality of Gaza Hospitals: How Hamas Uses Babies as Human Shields
Key Highlights :
The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has brought the plight of Gaza hospitals to the forefront of the world’s attention. Rep. Rashida Tlaib has come under fire for her tweet about 500 Palestinians being killed by an Israeli airstrike on a hospital, when the reality is that an errant rocket hit a parking lot a couple of blocks away. Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen has called for a ceasefire so that premature babies and pregnant women get the care they need.
However, the grim reality is that Gaza hospitals are at a breaking point. Premature babies have died from inability to generate oxygen—many more are at risk. Pregnant women and hundreds of severely injured civilians are trapped in the hospitals. For the sake of humanity, a long enough cessation of hostilities is needed to save these innocent lives.
The situation in Gaza hospitals is made worse by Hamas’s use of them as military headquarters. The IDF has released a video of Hamas headquarters beneath a children's hospital. The video shows the terror operation Hamas ran under Gaza's Rantisi Hospital for Children. It includes grenades, suicide vests, and RPGS, as well as a motorcycle used by Hamas terrorists to kidnap hostages. They even found a chair with rope, presumably used to tie hostages.
The question must be asked: why did Hamas build its military facilities inside a hospital? Where was the outrage for such a war crime over the last decade?
A “long” ceasefire, as some have suggested, will only give Hamas a chance to regroup and start the vicious baby-killing cycle again. The correct policy is to call for Hamas to surrender immediately. War is a horrible thing, and Hamas should have considered the consequences before it started a war with neighboring Israel and slaughtered 1400 civilians and took hostages, including US citizens.
Democrats have also been criticized for never demanding that Hamas surrender and release its hostages, nor mentioning the pregnant women and babies who were slaughtered in a surprise attack on Israel, or the babies taken hostage.
The only way to ensure the safety of innocent civilians in Gaza hospitals is for Hamas to stop using them as military headquarters and surrender. Israel has already delivered fuel to the hospitals, and is helping to evacuate babies to safer hospitals. It’s time for Hamas to do the same and end this conflict.
